About Glen Cove
It is widely understood by Glen Cove tutors that the name Glen Cove may have come about by accident, the residents misunderstanding a name suggestion of Glencoe after Glencoe in Scotland. Originally the settlement was named “Musketa Cove Plantation” which roughly translates as “place of rushes” from the Lenape language. Residents sought a name change after the port town’s name became negatively associated with mosquitoes.
There began a regular steamboat service between New York and Musketa Cove in the 1830s. When the town was beginning to grow one of the main sources of employment for residents was the Duryea Corn Starch factory. Glen Cove is and was one of the most sought after areas to reside on Long Island. Very wealthy business owners chose Glen Cove as the location for their vast estates. Both F.W. Woolworth and J.P.Morgan owned estates within the town’s rolling hills as well as Charles Pratt and his sons. The area benefitted from the accessibility provided by the railroads. Originally Glen Cove was seen as an ideal weekend or seasonal respite from the city. However, developments in infrastructure in more recent years meant it became a permanent place of residence for those commuting via the Long Island Rail Road into the city. The well-known “Gold Coast” of Nassau includes the stretch of sprawling estates where wealthy land Baron’s estates were nestled into the coastal landscape.
Glen Cove tutors tell us that these estates became popular in the filming of many movies and used as locations in numerous pictures including “Sabrina”, “North by Northwest”, “Hello Again”, “Batman Forever”, “Eyes Wide Shut”, and “Sex in the City 2”. The original “Sabrina” starring Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn had scenes filmed at the Glen Cove train station, as did 1987’s “Hello Again” which starred Shelley Long. The remake of “Sabrina” in 1995, which starred Harrison Ford, and the second “Sex In The City” movie, “Sex in the City 2,” both had seen that were was filmed on location at the former Junius Spencer Morgan III estate, now known as “Salutations”. Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” utilized the local Police department building in the shooting of scenes for the movie. The Police Station building is now known as the “North Shore Historical Museum”. The Webb Institute purchased the Braes Estate, which belonged to Charles Pratt’s son Herbert L Pratt, in 1945. It provided the perfect backdrop as Batman’s home, also known as “Wayne Manor” in the 1995 incarnation of Batman, “Batman Forever.” The current television series “Gotham,” which is also based on the comic book superhero Batman has also shot scenes outside of the Webb Institute on a regular basis.
