About Galveston
A coastal city in Texas that serves as one of the largest ports in the country, Galveston is widely regarded as a wonderful place to live. An economic force in the state, Galveston has its hand in several big industries, including health care and shipping. Steeped in Texas flavor, Galveston is home to many unique historical sites that bring in thousands upon thousands of tourists annually.
Considered a resort city in Texas, Galveston is located on a coastal island in the Gulf Coast. When you visit, it’s not hard to see why – with the ocean right there and lush vegetation all around, you definitely feel like you’re at a resort. Interestingly enough, this port city was established by Mexico as it fought hard for its independence from Spain back in the early 1800s. Of course, eventually, Texas won its own independence from Mexico years later, and the port city of Galveston served as the main station for the Texas Navy.
Now a wonderful place to live, Galveston boasts many beautiful sights and places to visit. If historical architecture interests you, you’ll be glad to know that there are six unique historic districts in Galveston, with a plethora of important historical buildings to see. Many Victorian era buildings are located in an area known as “The Strand” and have been repurposed. These beautiful buildings are now used for modern day shops, restaurants, and galleries. Other architectural assets of Galveston include many Romanesque Revival style buildings, Greek Revival style structures, as well as many wooden Gothic Revival style landmarks.
One troubling fact about Galveston’s Gulf Coast location is the seasonal threat of hurricanes. During the summer and autumn, Galveston is considered a high-risk area for these destructive storms. The greatest risk in the bay area is found on Galveston Island.
If you’re visiting Galveston, one popular tourist destination that should be on your list of places to go is Moody Gardens. A botanical garden with the natural wildlife and ecosystem on display, Moody Gardens features a golf course and hotel as well, making the area extremely tourist friendly. Within Moody Gardens, you’ll find three pyramid constructions, which signify the three different nature exhibits located within each one. A fun place to discover and explore for the whole family, Moody Gardens is also home to a ropes course as of a few years ago.
Two other fun places to visit while in Galveston are the Galveston Island State Park and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. The State Park is a gorgeous place to take the whole family and experience the natural beauty of the area. The Historic Pleasure Pier is perfect for those seeking an amusement park with a unique Texas flavor and fun rides for all ages.
