About Gainesville
Located along the south shore of Lake Lanier, Gainesville is a beautiful, hilly “mountain town” that is known for its scenic views and wooded areas. Nestled within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, Gainesville is a great place to raise a family and boasts a high quality of life for its residents.
When it comes to nicknames, Gainesville has a few. Gainesville has become known as the “Poultry Capital of the World”, so maybe you shouldn’t travel here if you’re a chicken! With numerous poultry processing facilities, these plants provide many jobs to residents in the area. Gainesville’s other nickname is the “Queen City of the Mountains”, which gives you a feel for just how beautiful this community in Georgia really is.
With direct access to all of the amenities of Lake Lanier, Gainesville residents love all of the water related activities afforded them because of their location. A manmade body of water, Lake Lanier was first created back in the 1950s. It’s main purpose as a source of hydroelectricity aside, Lake Lanier is a statewide destination for all of the recreational purposes associated with gorgeous lakes… boating, fishing, and swimming, among others. Much of the area surrounding Lake Lanier is heavily forested with a wide variety of foliage, including a number of species of native trees. Families love going on a weekend getaway at Lake Lanier, as there is always something fun for everyone, from camping to hiking nearby nature trails.
As is common in this region of the country, Gainesville experiences frequent tornado watches and warnings from spring through fall. Even though Gainesville is not considered to be located within Tornado Alley, they do still experience quite a bit of extreme weather and fierce windstorms. One unfortunate day in history back in the late 1930s, one of the top ten most deadly tornados in this country’s history struck Gainesville. Over two hundred people lost their lives on that day, an event that will not be easily forgotten by long time residents of Gainesville.
If you’re passing through Gainesville and looking for something fun to do, some of the events produced by the local Arts Council are worth checking out. This community arts council puts on many musical productions throughout the year, along with theatrical performances and art installments. Families that live here love the vibrant arts culture in Gainesville, and the Art Council does a great job to showcase a wide variety of art forms throughout the year.
