About French Valley
Today, French Valley is a small residential community most known for the French Valley Airport. To the untrained eye, it may seem like just one of many small towns in southern California; but to the locals, those whose families have been there for generations, French Valley is so much more. French Valley has seen dramatic changes throughout the decades. If only the land could talk; then we would hear the stories of all the people, cultures, languages, and traditions brought from lands, states, countries, and even continents away. We would hear the story of America, the manifest destiny of how the land changed from wild and untouched to the suburbs of modern society.
French Valley, like much of California, was originally land occupied by Native Americans. The native people of French Valley have great legends of Nahachish. Nahachish was said to be the leader of the Temecula people. He traveled with the people, leading them all through the valleys looking for a place to settle. The stories tell of how Nahachish was ambushed and killed, and as his spirit left him, he was transformed into a giant rock. Nahachish Rock is in French Valley and you can still visit it to this day. After Nahachish was gone, the people remained in the area and worked hard to survive in the harsh and unforgiving terrain. The first big change to the valley would come when Spanish missionaries moved to the area and transitioned the Native Americans into herders and farmers. Once the missionaries were called back to Spain, Spanish settlers took the people out of the abandoned missions and used them as laborers on their ranches. Time passed and California experienced another dramatic transition. Gold was discovered and many traveled west hoping to tap into the valuable resource. Eventually, the Mexican-American War would be fought and California would become part of the U.S.
At this point, people began to travel west to settle in California. Immigrants from many different countries worked hard to become citizens so that they could become homesteaders across the California Valley. French Valley is named in honor of the families that settled the area, who were originally from France. These settlers were a resilient few, those fortunate enough to survive drought, flooding, economic crisis, and a strenuous lifestyle. These pioneers would tutor the newcomers in how to survive and thrive in the difficult terrain. French Valley was mostly populated by sheep herders up until the 1960’s; but slowly, land was sold and developed, and now the rural farmland is a small town.
Whether you hope to pioneer your way into the next phase of French Valley’s History or simply complete an educational goal, French Valley tutors are standing by. French Valley tutors want to help everyone reach their goals, and be able to play their part in the American story that is still being written today.
