About Fairview
On the shores of the Columbia River just below the border with Washington, Fairview, Oregon is a short drive east from Portland on Interstate 84. During their 1806 exploration of the Columbia River, the Lewis and Clark Expedition were the among the first European-Americans to come through what is now Fairview. They discovered tribes of the Chinook Indians fishing, hunting and gathering along the river. A species of salmon is even named after this Native American group who lived near the Columbia for hundreds of years. Pioneers who braved crossing the continent on the Oregon Trail began settling and farming in the area in the 1840’s. With the extension of the railroad in the 1890’s the community began growing, and residents adopted the name Fairview because of the beautiful scenery including the river and snow-capped peak of Mt. Hood.
A Fairview tutor will keep you caught up on your academics so you can enjoy the many things to do in Fairview and the greater Portland metropolitan area. Just a few steps from the south shore of the Columbia River, Blue Lake Regional Park is a 101-acre recreational area complete with a natural lake fed by underground springs. The park offers boating, swimming, a nature themed playground, sports facilities and disc golf course. Visitors can rent paddle boats, fish from a pier, learn to play disc golf or just relax and think about the days when the park was a peaceful Chinook fishing village. Nearby Blue Lake is Chinook Landing Marine Park, one of the largest public boating facilities in Oregon with six launching lanes onto the Columbia River. Chinook Landing features wetland and wildlife habitats, an archery range and picnic grounds.
For those interested in the history of the area, the Heslin House and Fairview Historic Jail takes visitors back to bygone days. Originally built as a boarding house within walking distance of the train depot, Heslin House has undergone many changes over the years. After its tenure housing travelers, it became the Heslin family home in 1905 and remained so until 1991 when the Fairview-Rockwood-Wilkes Historical Society purchased the property and turned it into a history center and museum. Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Fairview City Jail was built in 1915. It’s a very small rectangular building with two jail cells although very few “prisoners” ever actually stayed in the jail. Over the years it has been used as temporary housing for hobos and as a cold storage facility by local shop owners. Today it is one of the last original correctional facilities in Oregon.
Residents of Fairview benefit from the activities and attractions in nearby Portland. Foodies will relish a trip to North Mississippi Avenue in Portland for the Mississippi Avenue Food Tour. The three-hour walking tour offers a variety of sights, sounds and tastes. Tour participants will be able to sample Chinese glass noodle salad, farmstead cheeses, artisan breads, local chocolates, Willamette Valley brewed beer and much more. The tour has been given five-star ratings by local and national newspapers and magazines.
