About Ennis
On a short jaunt down Texas State Highway 45 from Dallas an adventurous driver will not help but be lured by the charms of Ennis, a small town with a huge personality. Established in 1872, Ennis is not only a quaint stopover on the way south to Houston but also a quality destination of its own. Named after a railroad official and mayor of Houston, springtime is by far the best season to visit as the fields around Ennis come alive with the color of purple. The annual Bluebonnet Trails Festival takes place each April with over 40 miles of mapped bluebonnet trails, the oldest such trails in the state, surrounding the Ennis area. The bluebonnet, state flower of Texas, is any one of several species of lupine which are native to the southwestern United States. Thousands of visitors make the trip to Ennis to view the wildflowers and take part in the three-day festival, highlighted by live music, arts and crafts, and wine tasting.
Along with natural wonders, the city of Ennis is also known for its cultural appeal, especially its Czech heritage which is highlighted by the Czech Music Festival in February and the National Polka Festival held during Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. In 2016, the Polka Festival celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The event strives to immerse visitors in the traditions, customs, sights and sounds of Czechoslovakian culture. Begun in 1967, the festival features three days of historic music, dancing, food and styles. The festival includes a downtown parade and a King and Queen Dance contest. The dance winners often wear the customary costumes of their Czech ancestors.
Another cultural attraction which focuses on local history is the Ennis Railroad and Culture Museum. Here the visitor will learn the entwined histories of the railroads and the city of Ennis. They will also learn some interesting trivia such as the fact that the notorious Younger gang, friends of Jesse James, once stopped in Ennis and that New York Giants football star and Congressional Medal of Honor winner (for bravery in World War II) Jack Lummus was a native of Ennis.
For those with a need for speed, Ennis is home to the National Hot Rod Association’s world speed record of over 330 miles per hour achieved on the speedway at the Texas Motorplex. Known as the “ultimate drag racing facility” the track plays host to over 90 events every year. Built in 1986 it has been the site of several racing achievements and famous Funny Car driver Don “The Snake” Prudhomme called the Texas Motorplex “a field of dreams.”
If boating, fishing, water skiing or swimming is on the agenda, then Lake Bardwell on the southwest border of the city is the place to come. Over 500,000 visitors come to the 3,500 acres of sparkling water. One thing is for sure, an Ennis tutor will get you well ahead of the curve in your studies so you can enjoy the amenities of the local area.
