About East Tremont
East Tremont in the Bronx is a small enclave, and like many of its neighboring communities, has a unique diverse cultural makeup. Neighborhoods echo with a mixture of languages, smells, and distinct practices that invite visitors in to find out more. Among this diversity, however, is the reality of human struggle. In particular, residents of the Bronx who have undergone trauma, loss, disability, and other life-altering factors need a place to go for help and guidance. Abbott House, operating out of Irving, has a special branch in East Tremont that helps individuals—from children to adolescents and even adults—get the mental and physical care they need to continue to thrive in their community.
Since 1963, this foundation has served people with complex needs, many of whom have nowhere else to go and no one else to turn to in a time of crisis. Their mission statement and purpose, as articulated on their website, reads, “The essence of our organization exists in our human spirit – the spirit and passion of those that serve and the spirit and determination of those who accept our services.” As a social service organization, Abbott House helps individuals recover and receive the resources necessary to overcome trauma in their lives. Trauma can further complicate the physical, behavioral, and developmental outcomes for people suffering and under duress. Coupled with the very real circumstances of poverty—well over half of East Tremont lives below the poverty line—it is easy to see the role Abbott House can play for the better of the community over all.
This organization functions in many capacities that social services address. For example, Abbott House facilitates and trains people to become foster parents. They also partner with other local organizations that help the underprivileged and the needy. For the past several decades, joint partnerships have formed between Abbott House and other individuals and organizations to work cooperatively with state and county authorities, as well as other charitable movements, to provide care for the marginalized and downtrodden. Abbott House, ultimately, is an advocate for people, in the truest sense of the word, by recognizing their humanity first and foremost, and then helping them lead stable and functional lives.
Like the dedicated workers and volunteers for Abbott House, Grade Potential tutors in East Tremont recognize the need for individuals to lead stable, happy lives. Academic success is an important happiness factor in the lives of many students, so when it is not met, discouragement is a natural result. With the help of a tutor, however, students have a guide and a friend to navigate the learning process and turn bad grades around with renewed efforts and self-confidence.
