When you think of Hollywood, you see big screens, lights, theaters, musuems, celebrities, and just about anything and everything related to film or stardom. The droves of tourists that walk the streets, stopping at boutiques, buying souvenirs, and sight-seeing, make up the aura of the town. But did you know, that not that far away from this hustle and bustle, the high glamour life, is East Hollywood in California, a town that has held on to its local feel, and one where you won’t find the crazy fast pace of Hollywood.
East Hollywood is a town that refuses to fit the mold of its larger and more glamorous neighbors. They take pride in their unkempt neighborhoods, where you might find graffiti art, garden statues, maybe even a broken-down car. But many of these things are used canvas for the cities large population of independent artists. That broken-down car might be covered with a hand painted mural, a tribute to whatever might have been going through the artist’s mind at the time.
You will more than likely come across community fairs, where sidewalk musicians show off their undiscovered talent for all those that want to listen. Churros stands can be found on multiple corners, and who doesn’t love churros? East Hollywood is known for is diverse culture as well, with Thai town, Little Armenia, and a very strong Hispanic culture, which explains the churro stands! This town has held on to its original charm, and here you won’t see celebrities walking the streets, but you will see the original suburban neighborhoods, every day people heading to work, and celebrations going on on the sidewalks.
There are a few larger landmarks here, the first being the original campus of the University of California Los Angeles, before it moved to its current location. Now that campus serves as the Los Angeles City College, where residents take classes and meet with their East Hollywood tutors. There is The Church of Scientology’s West Coast Headquarters here as well, a sight probably chosen for the fact that it was close to everything yet away from the busy streets of Hollywood and Los Angeles.
While everything is close enough that you could easily hop on a bus and go check it out, sometimes it’s nice to get away from all that noise, and return home to a place not constantly flooded by tourists and attractions. It also gives you a more settled place to meet with your East Hollywood tutor, where you might have an easier time focusing then when you’re surrounded by so many distractions.
