About Dunwoody
Rich in southern history, Dunwoody is a suburb of Atlanta in the north central part of the state of Georgia. Old, gorgeous buildings from the South’s historic past can be found throughout Dunwoody. With a tight-knit community and a laid back lifestyle, those that live in Dunwoody love being a part of its diverse population.
With its origins dating back to the early 1800s, Dunwoody’s history can be seen in a number of local landmarks, old buildings, and community structures. Several of its historical buildings date back hundreds of years, including the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, which still holds active worship services to this day. Behind the church, you will find one of Dunwoody’s largest and oldest cemeteries, which is an interesting place to visit. You can see where many of the city’s ancestors were buried, and it gives visitors a sense of Dunwoody’s deep history.
Another old, historic building is the Dunwoody Farmhouse. It is considered to be the “historic center” of Dunwoody, as much of the neighboring community features similarly old houses and historic structures. This area of Dunwoody is called “Dunwoody Village” and is considered to be this historical district. A great place to take a tour of the beautiful old buildings of this area, those who have an interest in historical architecture will discover that many of the buildings feature a common style. A very unique look, Colonial Williamsburg style is an architectural style from the mid 20th century.
Boasting nearly two hundred acres of open green space, the Parks and Recreation Department of Dunwoody takes pride in providing beautiful outdoor spaces for residents and tourists to enjoy. With seven well-maintained city parks, Dunwoody provides plenty of areas for families to bring their kids and enjoy the great outdoors. Sports fields, playgrounds, and nature paths are common throughout the community. Tennis courts, skate parks, and picnicking areas are also popular among residents of Dunwoody.
If you’re visiting Dunwoody, one of the stops that should be on your list is the Dunwoody Nature Center. Fun for all ages, the Dunwoody Nature Center features beautiful flora and fauna to observe, including a forested area, a creek, and an interactive learning area. Admission is free, and many locals come through to walk on the network of nature paths inside the center. Special classes and events are held at the Dunwoody Nature Center regularly, so there’s always something new to check out.
