About Dunedin
Dunedin like its namesake in New Zealand is named after Edinburgh in Scotland. The Scottish or Gaelic for Edinburgh is ‘Dunedin’. As you may have concluded this city was originally settled by the Scottish, who christened the city after their hometown in 1852. Dunedin was a natural fit for families in the mid eighteen hundreds it’s location close to a water source once developed made it a prime spot to set up a port. At one time it surpassed all other ports in Florida as being the chief seaport in the state.
According to Dunedin tutors one of the most famous landmarks in the region is the Fenway Hotel which is due to re-open in 2018 under the umbrella of Marriott Hotels’ Autograph Collection. For a long time the fate of the Fenway Hotel was uncertain and it appeared to be in a dilapidated state however through the last year or so some significant updating has occurred in order to turn The Fenway into a world class hotel and restore it as a bustling hotspot for sophisticated tourists.
The Fenway originally opened its doors in the roaring twenties and quickly became a magnet for artists like John M. Donaldson, prominent politicians and government officials like Harley M. Kilgore, Stephen Early and Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis; it even attracted inventor Charles F. Kettering, and renowned explorer Robert Bartlett.
In 1926 The Fenway was also the location for Pinella County’s very first radio station. WGHB taking the initials of it’s owner George H Bowles was an AM radio station, it was bought out by Edward A. Haley the owner of Clearwater’s Fort Harrison Hotel and relocated to the Clearwater Community House, here he changed the call sign to WFHH (named after his hotel). The call sign was tampered with yet again after it was partly bought out by the St Petersburg’s Chamber of Commerce, they renamed their half WSUN and Clearwater’s half became WFLA.
The hotel complex ended up being sold in 1961 and became the property of Trinity College who transformed the hotel into a Bible center and academy. According to Dunedin tutors, after Trinity College relocated, the old hotel sat empty for four years until it was reborn again, this time under the guidance of Schiller International University. In this incarnation it housed students who had travelled to study in Florida from all corners of the world and who were interested in studying international business and tourism.
