    About Douglasville

The area now known as Douglasville was previously known by Native Americans as 'skint chestnut' because tribes and traders that lived in the area used a particular chestnut tree to find their way. Native Americans stripped the tree of its bark to make it stand out more as a landmark. Later white settlers changed the name to "Skinned Chestnut." In 1870 Skinned Chestnut was selected as the Douglas County seat and not long after that the city name officially changed to Douglasville.

The first Georgia Pacific Railroad workers arrived in Douglasville in August, 1881 to begin grading for the track. Track laying for the railroad was begun in November, 1881. It came West from Atlanta and moved forward at a rate of just one mile of track each day. Today the Georgia Pacific Railroad runs east to west through Douglasville. It remains a prominent part of historic downtown area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown area is frequently cited as a fine example of a turn-of-the-century southern railroad town. It is picturesque and a popular filming location. It can be seen in popular movies and television series such as Netflix's Stranger Things, The Founder, Mocking Jay Part 1, Catching Fire, MTV's Finding Carter and Kill the Messenger. The downtown business area is also home to the Douglas County Cultural Arts Center and the Douglas County Museum of History and Art. Visitors can enjoy a self guided tour of historic buildings in the downtown area. Downtown Douglasville also hosts a variety of community events through out the year. Some examples include: The Taste of Douglasville, the annual Juneteenth Celebration, Spring, Summer, and Fall concert series, a Moonlight 5k run, a Chili Cook-off, and the July 4th and Christmas parades.

Douglasville residents enjoy a hundreds of acres of outdoor parks and wilderness area. It is a popular place for outdoor enthusiasts and boasts facilities for a wide variety of outdoor sports. Foxhall Sporting Club, for example, offers 1100 acres of "sportsman's paradise" including 16 lakes for boating and fishing and 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horse back riding. Hikers and history buffs will also enjoy Sweet Water Creek State park which features trails, incredible views, and ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company which was a textile mill that burned during the Civil War.
