About Delray Beach
When Delray was settled it started as one of the most diverse towns in its region. Delray's first settlers were African Americans who then welcomed in people from the Bahamas, West Indies and even Japanese farmers. By the early 1900's Delray's occupants were form over 24 different US cities and 9 other countries. Farming citrus groves among other fruits were what brought them all together. Pineapple, tomato, oranges, and other tropical fruits were grown in Delray. The abundance of crops led Delray to open canning plants in 1911 and pineapple became their main produce.
When World War II came around residents of Delray took to the beaches. From its shores, people could watch war in the seas. Many of the military personnel stationed in Delray made a decision to stay there and make a home after the war was done. Although the war was over that did not stop shipwrecks from taking place near Delray. When Hurricane Betsy came through in ‘65 it took down freighter Amaryllis near Singer Island. As a result it created a windbreak that made perfectly breaking waves. Surfers came from all around to Delray to surf the shipwreck which remains a popular surf spot to this day.
Even before Hurricane Betsy and WWII Delray was home to the shipwreck of S.S. Inchulva in 1903. During another Hurricane this freighter was grounded just 500 feet off the shore of Delray in about 20 feet deep of water. Unfortunately, the 38 man crew was not aware how close they were to the shore and nine members lost their lives that day. Though not much of the freighter is left, the wreck has become a hotspot for snorkeling and diving. During high tide snorkelers can explore the wreck and swim amongst the various fish that call it home. Triggerfish, Grunts, Tarpon, Stonefish and many others will be swimming along with you in the wreck of S.S. Inchilva.
Despite the many wrecks that have harbored in Delray, it was named America's Most Fun Small Town in 2012. Downtown Delray Beach holds lively festivals throughout the year for residents and tourists to enjoy. Visitors can enjoy spending a night in a historical Delray home. The Sundy house has been converted into a luxurious spa where former family apartments have been turned into guest rooms. Guest can enjoy a cup of coffee in Sundy's own cafe before heading out to enjoy one of the many fun activities available in Delray Beach.
