About Covina
The small city of Covina in Southern California is certainly not small in personality. With a unique history and a vibrant culture, Covina has a lot to offer both residents and tourists who find themselves here. Just a short drive from downtown Los Angeles, Covina is also the perfect place to live if you commute to Los Angeles for work every day.
Long before the Spanish explorers arrived to this region in California, what is now present day Covina was inhabited by a Native American tribe called the Tongva people. They lived here for thousands of years, and it wasn't until the Spanish established land grants called rancheros in the 1800s that other settlers moved to this area. With fertile soil and geography set up perfectly for farming, Covina has seen a lot of successful farming ventures throughout the years.
What's in a name? Covina has an interesting name, and it is completely made up. Taken from the two words "cove" and "vine", Covina was named for the perfect way that the geography of the land was set up for growing vineyards. The cove-like shape helped to shelter the land and create its own sort of ecosystem. Despite the "vine" in its name, Covina became much more well-known for growing citrus fruits than grapes. With a giant orange on the city's logo, Covina was known in the early 1900s to be the third largest orange producer in the entire world, which is a pretty big deal considering much of this area in California was growing oranges at that time. As is true for a lot of Southern California, Covina replaced many orchards and farm fields with developments and neighborhoods, so it looks a lot different today than it did in the mid 1900s.
