Named after Morris Cooper, founder of the community in 1959, Cooper City is located in the South Florida Metropolitan area. For those who find archaeology of interest, Cooper City is home to a historical site which contains evidence of habitation as early as 500 A.D. During excavation, many test holes were drilled down into the earth, and a large amount of faunal bones from various local wildlife were brought to the surface, which were typical food resources of southeast Florida. Sand tempered plain pottery shards and other cultural findings were dug up as well, which gave diggers evidence of Cooper City’s previous inhabitants. The grave of a 19th century Seminole Indian woman was also uncovered here, shedding light on the original native people who lived here in southeastern Florida. A gravesite was discovered, along with glass beads from a necklace, a porcelain button from a blouse, a human molar and cranial bone fragments. The age of the grave is estimated to be over a hundred years old. This archeological site is an interesting peek into the past, and reveals a lot about the history of this land.

Hurricanes are a common weather-related hazard to Cooper City, Florida. Developing a “Hurricane Plan” is important, and Cooper City officials encourage residents to “Be informed, be safe, and be prepared”. “Every family, every business and every community must have that Hurricane Plan in place and know what to do before the hurricane season gets here,” according to Max Mayfield, Former Director of the National Hurricane Center. Hurricanes are no joke!
