Brooklyn is a borough in New York City, New York, that is fully of many diverse communities and neighborhoods, each unique and vibrant in its own way. Clinton Hill is one such community in Brooklyn, located in the northern part of the borough, and was named for the fact that it is the highest elevation in this part of New York. That being said, the elevation is still low, but back when the community was founded, many residents believed that due to its higher elevation, they were avoiding certain diseases that ravaged the lower elevation parts of the country. Though we know this is not true today, it is just an example of one of the very interesting parts of Clinton Hill’s rich history in the grate state of New York.

Before Clinton Hill was the urban neighborhood that it is today, it was primarily farmland. With its origins going back to the early 1600s when many Dutch immigrants settled in this area, Clinton Hill was primarily a farming community for tobacco and other popular crops of the time. When the late 1800s rolled around, the industrialization of New York City attracted more and more immigrants to come make a new life for their families in the United States, and so Clinton Hill saw a significant population jump. Land developers leapt at the opportunity to create more urban neighborhoods, and row houses were constructed in attract the more affluent New York citizens.

There are many historic buildings in Clinton Hill, and some of these beautiful homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A few of the buildings listed on the Clinton Hill Historical Society Registry are quite striking, with very unique architectural style. These homes are protected and restored to preserve these pieces of history for future generations to enjoy. A few of the homes worth seeing (the next time you’re visiting Brooklyn) include the Mechanics Temple, the Royal Castle Apartments, and the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew.

As the entire city of New York is served by the New York Department of Education, Clinton Hill also utilizes all of the educational resources provided by the city. With access to many great public schools, private schools, and charter schools, students have access to quite a few choices when it comes to choosing which school is right for them.
