    About Chanhassen

Chosen as one of the best suburbs of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area by the real estate web site Movoto, Chanhassen, Minnesota boasts a high median income and low crime rate. In 2009 Money magazine ranked Chanhassen as the second-best city to live in America. The city gets its name from the Dakota word for a sugar maple tree. An early settler, Clarissa Cleveland, is credited with naming the town and the city logo is a maple leaf. Many early settlers were German Catholic immigrants looking for a safe place to farm and become prosperous. St. Hubert’s Catholic Church is the oldest church in the community and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town remained quite small for many years and the population totaled only about 200 people in 1950. By the late 1960’s, agriculture had diminished and the areas which were once farm land were turned into residential neighborhoods. Today, the city is one of the most affluent places in the twin cities metropolitan region.

A Chanhassen tutor will be able to keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can enjoy all the amenities of Chanhassen and Minneapolis-St. Paul. In 1968, visionary builder Herb Bloomberg built the Chanhassen Dinner theatre, the largest such venue in the United States. The theatre can still entertain up to 600 visitors for performances of live music, dramatic plays and musicals. It was one of the filming locations for the popular movie Fargo. With the recent death of iconic musician Prince, his musical sanctuary Paisley Park in Chanhassen has now been opened to the public. Prince thought of the place as a “unique universe unto itself” with a state of the art sound studio and performance stage. During his lifetime, he would sometimes open the studio to tours but always envisioned it would one day permanently stay open to his fans.

On the western edge of Chanhassen, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum was established in 1958 and consists of 1,200 acres of horticultural gardens, tree collections and more than 5,000 varieties of plant species. It was originally a gift to the University of Minnesota by several horticulture groups in the area including the Men’s Garden Club of Minneapolis and the Lake Minnetonka Garden Club. The arboretum offers miles of trails through both prairie and woods habitats. Throughout the arboretum visitors can view several original sculptures created to enhance the environment by renowned American and international artists. One of the most popular exhibits in the arboretum is the Wildflower Garden which features Minnesota’s state flower the Showy Lady’s Slipper. The arboretum also features specialized tours, conferences and gallery shows.

On Chanhassen’s northern edge, Lake Minnetonka is a haven for boaters and fishermen alike. First popular in the late 1800’s, the lake has a long history with hotels and resorts dotting the lake shore. Lake Minnetonka Regional Park is an ideal spot for families with ample fishing, hiking and biking as well as picnic grounds and a disc golf course. In the winter, the recreational area is open for skiing, sledding and snowmobiling.
