About Chamblee
Chamblee (prounounced sham-blee) is located in Northern DeKalb County Georgia. At just over 3 square miles the area was originally home to dairy farms and prior to that populated by Creek and Cherokee tribes. Today Chamblee is a thriving, diverse, international community known throughout the South for the welcome it extends to immigrants from all over the world.
The road from small southern town to growing Atlanta suburb with international flair is an interesting one. City of Chamblee was incorporated by the state of Georgia in 1908. At the time of its incorporation nearly all the Chamblee land was used for dairy farms. In World War I a portion of the dairy farms grew into Camp Gordon; a training site for 40,000 servicemen. Camp Gordon closed at the end of the war but the same site reopened in World War II as a Navy Flight Training Center.
After World War II Chamblee welcomed many large manufacturing companies with names still recognizable today such as General Motors, Kodak, Frito Lay, and General Electric. However in 1980 these manufacturing plants began to close. Populations in Chamblee neighborhoods fell as many residents sought jobs and housing in other Atlanta suburbs. At the same time many new immigrants and refugees found affordable housing in Chamblee and work in nearby Atlanta and began to revitalize Chamblee neighborhoods. The Buford Highway where many of these neighborhoods are located is also known as the DeKalb International Corridor.
Today one of the crown jewels in the area is the Atlanta's Chinatown Mall. Opened in 1988 the mall serves as a cultural center for the growing population of Chinese Americans in DeKalb county. The Mall features a Chinese supermarket and a herbal medicine shop and a food court where visitors can sample authentic food from many different regions in China. The City of Chamblee celebrates their diverse community every year with a community and food Festival called Taste of Chamblee.
Residents of Chamblee enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities and a network of parks with plenty of green space. About 20 minutes outside of Chamblee residents can visit 3200 acres of open space known as Stone Mountain Park. Here visitors can golf, fish, hike, or swim. There are public picnic areas, a children's playground, a Quarry Exhibit, the Confederate Hall Historical & Environmental Education Center and laser show set against the backdrop of giant natural stone landmark mountain. For the more adventurous the park also features a variety of ropes adventure courses, a water park, and a mountain summit gondola. The park also hosts temporary traveling exhibits like Dinosaur Adventure where visitors can get up close and personal with more than 20 life sized animatronic dinosaurs.
