About Carrollton
Adventure-seeking visitors to Carrollton, Georgia, will be glad to hear that the town’s recreational offerings could be considered a cut above—at least to biking, disc golf, ziplining, climbing, and reading enthusiasts. That’s because Carrollton has the state’s longest closed-loop bike trail, the best disc golf course in the state, the longest zip line and tallest free-standing climbing wall in the world, and the oldest bookstore in the state. Below is an introduction to each of these fabulous places.
Disc Golf Course at Hobbs Park
The Hobbs Disc Golf Course was voted the best course in all of Georgia in spring 2017. The 8,579-foot course, which opened in 2016, was designed by John Houck, a designer of many state-of-the-art disc golf courses. The eighteen-hole course features trees and open spaces with a rolling elevation.
Carrollton GreenBelt
Carrolton Greenbelt is an eighteen-mile bike path that encircles the city. On its route, it meanders through many scenic areas, including Hobbs Farm Park and Hobbs Farm Disc Golf Course. Once completed, it will provide an alternative to automobile travel as it connects neighborhoods with schools, parks, shopping areas, and the University of West Georgia.
Horton’s Books & Gifts
Horton’s Books, certified as the oldest bookstore in Georgia by American Booksellers Association, was founded in 1892 and is still in its original Adamson Square location in downtown Carrollton. The bookstore is also Carrollton and Carroll County’s oldest business.
Screaming Eagle zipline and climbing wall
Although not technically in Carrollton, these two attractions, located about ten miles east of Carrollton in Historic Banning Mills, just needed to be on this list! In the middle of 300 wooded acres, the resort and retreat center is the home of a zipline that has been certified as the longest in the world by Guinness World Records. In all, the canopy tour has six levels (51,000 lineal feet, or nearly ten miles!) and humongous sky bridges, some up to about 600 feet. The facility uses a patented, closed belay system that keeps its user connected from beginning to end.
The resort can also claim a second honor bestowed by Guinness: the tallest freestanding artificial climbing wall. The wall measures 41.89 meters, or 137.42 feet—equivalent to fourteen stories. The wall has nine climbing lanes, two rappel walls (up to 95 feet high), and four overhangs.
Carrollton has much more to offer beyond these four attractions, but these are a great place to start if you are visiting Carrollton and love adventure (and reading!).
