The history of Carrboro lies deep within the grist mill industry, milling cotton and lumber as well. A local businessman with the last name of “Carr” is the town’s namesake, and Mr. Carr was very influential in the local milling industries that made this area so successful in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Providing jobs to local Carrboro residents as well as residents from many of the surrounding communities, the local mills in Carrboro were very successful and profitable until around the time of the Great Depression, which ultimately closed many of these mills by the time it was over. Other industries moved into the area, and the University of North Carolina brought many young professionals to the community of Carrboro. Today, many of the old mill buildings and industrial structures are on a list of protected buildings in the Carrboro Commercial Historic District, which itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Known for its vibrant and popular Farmer’s Market, Carrboro hosts this weekly street market where locals can come to buy directly from local farmers and crafters. The Carrboro Farmer’s Market has been around since the 1970s and is very popular among the local students that come here from the nearly university campus.

The ArtsCenter is a local community center here in Carrboro which is known for hosting many big comedy and music acts, bringing in big names from around the country. Local Carrboro residents love having this local venue, as it also provides a wide variety of classes, programs, and seminars for everything from dance classes, art courses, and more.

The Carrboro Music Festival is a very popular local event, bringing in visitors from around the state each year. As it is a completely free concert series that spans the course of a three-day period, poetry readings, musical concerts, and art installations can all be found at this event. The Carrboro Music Festival is fun for the whole family and there really is something for everyone.

When it comes to local education here in Carrboro, the local public schools provide a high quality of education.
