About Buckroe Beach
Like other communities in the Hampton area in Virginia, Buckroe Beach has been around since the colonial days in America. In the early 1600s, the Buck Roe Plantation was set in place in the Buckroe Beach area for public use. Frenchmen were originally sent by the London Company to teach silkworm culture to the colonists. But, by 1637, tobacco took over the plantation and became their new commodity. When the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway came through in 1882, so did the tourists from the surrounding East Coast areas. This led Civil War widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Dobbins Herbert, to open the town's first summer boarding house for its new visitors. People began to come to town by horse drawn carriages which led to Mrs. Herbert to open a public bathhouse next to her boarding house. Buckroe did not slow down here. Instead, they only grew bigger in the entertainment industry for the Hampton area.
Modes of transportation began to expand while also becoming more efficient. During the late 1800s, an electric trolley car line was extended into Buckroe. The local entrepreneur did not stop at just bringing in his trolleys. He opened a hotel, dancing pavilion and an amusement park. This new amusement park turned Buckroe into a vacation destination for the East Coast. Despite the town's new popularity, it did not make the town immune to racial segregation. A beachfront was purchased next to Buckroe Beach by several businessmen in 1898. They named it Bay Shore Beach and Resort, making it a segregated beach for African Americans. Despite the segregation, the amusement park was open through the mid-1980s. Unfortunately, the amusement park did not remain a popular attraction.
When the Busch Gardens Williamsburg opened, revenue began to decline for the Buckroe amusement park. When the Hamptons celebrated their 400th anniversary in 2010, some recalled what the park was like when they were children. One remembers the park when he was a young boy in the 1960s. By then the park already began to decline. The park was closed in 1985 because it could not keep up with the Busch Gardens. A tutor in your area will help you ace your classes. After being vacant and vandalized, the park was torn down in 1991. Some remnants are still around of the park. The Buckroe Beach Carousel and the Bruder band organ were relocated to the downtown Hampton waterfront. In Buckroe, the still functioning lighthouse from the parks miniature golf course stands as a reminder. Although the park became deserted, the community of Buckroe still is a popular place to visit. Fisherman still gathers on their popular fishing pier during summer months. Tourists will come for the fishing and fall in love with the scenery and community.
