About Brownsville
In the eastern region of the great city of Brooklyn you will find the vibrant community of Brownsville, New York. A community full of hard working people, Brownsville is known for being very diverse as a primarily residential area of the big city of Brooklyn.
Brownsville started out as a housing community for workers in the nearby factories, and the population was largely Jewish. Throughout the past century, Brownsville has become much more diverse, as many hispanic, latin, and African American families have moved here. Brownsville is known for having many low-income housing developments and projects for those who can't afford the big-city prices of Brooklyn. As a result, Brownsville has become a residential community, and most of Brownsville's residents live here and work in nearby cities, commuting a very short distance to work each day.
In the late 1900s, Brownsville went through a really rough patch as it dealt with extreme poverty in many of its neighborhoods. To make matters worse, the 70s brought a dangerous arson that ravaged many neighborhoods throughout this area of Brooklyn, and many Brownsville buildings suffered substantial damages as a result. The silver lining of this destruction was that it garnered the attention of local officials and state funding, and many buildings in Brownsville were rehabilitated. More jobs were created as a result, and Brownsville's crime rate began to drop.
Making use of empty lots within the community, Brownsville residents have created community gardens for all of its citizens to partake in and enjoy. Not only does this create a fun and healthy activity for local residents, but it also adds some beauty and color to the otherwise drab landscape of the neighborhoods of Brownsville.
There are several notable historical points of interest within the community of Brownsville, as there are quite a few old, historic buildings. One of the most well-known historic sites is the old theatre, the Loews Pitkin building. It's one of the only theaters like it still around today, and it's distinct architectural style is very unique. Though it is no longer a theater, it has been refurbished and protected, and is now used as a retail space and a charter school, among other things.
When it comes to local education, students in Brownsville are afforded many local educational resources. With public, private, and charter school options, students in Brownsville have several choices when it comes to their education. For students of any grade level, local Brownsville tutors are available. These local tutors can meet with each student one-on-one to help them with their problem areas and develop an action plan to achieve educational success.
