About Brownstown
Brownstown Michigan is a small township, a quiet area that site next to a busy Interstate. Generations of Michigan residents have known Brownstown as a small, family oriented area. While they have all the amenities that a larger town would, including shopping centers and access to Brownstown tutors, they have held on to their small-town ways.
If you’ve been meeting with your Brownstown history tutor, then you have probably touched upon the War of 1812. The war was a battle between the United States and British, Canadian, and Native American armies. The United States was upset about the British imposing so many restrictions on American trade, as well as capturing American seamen and fighting the United States’ desire to expand. This was a long and costly gamble for the United States, and during this war the capitol was actually burned down. Some thought we were going to lose, and there were some bleak times, however the United States fought long and hard and eventually won. This was soon as a great unification for the United States, and many viewed it as a second war for independence.
During this war, there was actually a small battle fought at Brownstown Michigan. In 1812 there was a small regiment of soldiers on their way to Detroit to help relieve some of the pressures there. Stocked with cattle and supplies, they were on their way to meet up with General Hull and his men, when they stopped to rest in the Brownstown area. A message was sent to General Hull to inform him that about a Native American tribe lead by Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was in the area and had potentially joined up with British forces. The soldiers were worried about a raid due to the amount of supplies they had, and were requesting some back up to help them reach their location safely. General Hull agreed and sent two hundred men their direction, led by Major Van Horne. When the troops were only 3 miles way the Native American tribe attacked the army, and disoriented, the Americans retreated. While this was just a small skirmish, it showed that supply lines were insecure, and shook General Hull’s resolve.
