About Ballwin
The city of Ballwin Missouri is an interesting one for a few different reasons. For starters, it’s the only town in the United States known by that name, the closest other towns come is Baldwin. That in and of itself is a pretty unique feat. The city was originally known as Ballshow, however the founder John Ball changed the name just two days after submitting it. No one is quite sure why, but the guess is that due to John Ball’s rivalry with the neighboring town of Manchester, he added the word “win” to the end to signify that his town would always win.
Even more interesting than that, however, is that Ballwin is the town that almost wasn’t. Around 1797 or 1798 John Ball moved to the West St. Louis County area, the first record of his presence was purchase of 400 acres along Grande Glaize Creek, which was originally only going to function as his farm. When John Ball purchased the land, it was under a Spanish grant, and the property under Spanish rule. If you’ve met with your Ballwin tutor recently then you know about the Louisiana Purchase, which directly affected the future of Ballwin. Due to that purchase John Ball’s property was in limbo for almost 10 years as he petitioned and battled to prove ownership of his property. All John Ball wanted his plot of land to settle and live on.
Fate had bigger plans, however and in the early 1800’s the capital of Missouri was moved to Jefferson City, which created the need for a mail route between there and St. Louis. Jefferson road was established, and as luck would have it, it ran right by John Ball’s property. The creation of Market Road and Manchester Road not long after gave John Ball the idea that he could turn his settlement in to a regular town. With such luck, so far there’s no way it couldn’t work.
Today Ballwin has lived up to John Ball’s expectations, with a population of over 30,000 people it takes up a lot more than the original 400 acres John Ball used to create it. It’s hard to believe that were in not for John Ball’s persistence in keeping his land, the town may never have been. Thankfully it does exist, and provides you plenty of opportunities to meet with your Ballwin tutor and move forward to leave your mark on the world.
