    About Avon Lake

Early settlements in America experienced many different transitions before becoming an official state or city of the United States. Avon Lake, located on the coastline of Lake Erie, has been apart of three different nations before becoming a U.S. territory. In the 17th century, the lake was settled by the French. Like most territories once owned by France, the French were run out by the British in 1765. Following the British, in 1783, the United States forced the British to move out after their Revolutionary War win. But before the wars and fights between the New World’s nation, natives called this area home. Several tribes settled by the lake and traded amongst each other. At one time Eries, Ottawas, Wyandots and more tribes made the lake their home.

The Erie tribe specifically made home on the south shore of Lake Erie. But after five years of warfare with neighboring Iroquois tribes, the Eries were destroyed in the 17th century. The Senecas especially waged war with Eries for helping Huron during the Beaver Wars which involved the fur trade. Present day Avon Lake, Avon, Bay Village and Westlake were all known as the Xeuma territory. Xeuma is a Native American term meaning “those who come before us”. The territory was purchased by the Connecticut Land Company in 1795, after a series of treaties were put in place. The territory would now be known as the Western Reserve. This territory would eventually become divided after settlements became more permanent and advanced. The first to call the lakeshore at Avon home was Noah Davis. He arrived in 1812 and built a three sided cabin. Farming was started on the south end of the lake by Wilbur Cahoon. Cahoon, who owned the land David built his home on, began farming the south end in 1814, based off Davis’s advice. Just four years later, Cuyahoga County drew boundaries, splitting Xeuma in half.

Adam Miller and his families moved into the area and are still there today. The family cleared land and sawed timber to build ships for the Black River, near Avon Lake. This was a fitting business for the family as many European seamen already were settled in the Avon Lake area. A number of sawmills and shipyards made Avon Lake’s shorline home with the Miller’s. The town of Avon Lake remains a quaint little town that embraces the nature which surrounds it. They have become a designated Tree City USA, meaning they are dedicated to expanding their public trees. Avon Lake takes great pride in their beautiful coastline and trees that line it. Several community parks are sprinkled along the coast for visitors and residents to enjoy and take in their beautiful surroundings.
