About Andover
The city known today as Andover, Minnesota, was first known as Round Lake Township in 1857. In 1860, town leadership changed the name to Grow Township in honor of Galusha Grow. Grow was a Pennsylvania senator who once spoke at a rally in Anoka County. Galusha Grow was an advocate of the Union cause in the years leading up to the Civil War. The name changed again around 1899 when the Eastern Minnesota line of the Great Northern Railway began construction of railroad tracks. The railway announced new named railroad stations. The station for Grow Township was to be named Andover. It is unknown where the railway company came up with the name Andover. It wasn't until 1974 that the town, still known as Grow Township, officially changed its name to Andover. There is also popular myth that a train tipped over in a nearby swamp and an eyewitness reported that the train went “over AND-OVER,” thereby naming the city. There are no historical records, however, to support this colorful local lore. Your City of Andover tutor can help you learn more about what makes this Minnesota town so special.
Andover Minnesota residents take outdoor recreation very seriously no matter the weather. The city features more than 400 acres of community and neighborhood parks. Kelsey Round Lake Park is a 136-acre nature area where visitors can hike, ski in the winter or enjoy wildlife observation. Anoka County Bunker Hills Regional Park features trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, as well as space camping and other outdoor activities. In warm weather months, typically early June through Labor Day, Bunker Hills Regional park is also home to Bunker Beach Water park; Minnesota's largest outdoor water park facility. Bunker Hill Regional Park is also home to horse stables. You can bring your own horse to ride or schedule a trail ride, sleigh ride, hay ride, carriage ride, or lesson with horses provided by Anoka County Parks and recreation.
Andover Community Center is also a popular place to visit. It features an indoor pool, a fitness center and something else you may not find in any other small town community center: an indoor ice arena. It seats 800 people and it is open year round for lessons, public skate, and hockey. The community center has meeting rooms where you can meet your tutor. For a more active study session be sure to visit the indoor track.
One of the most popular and highly anticipated Summer events is the annual Andover Family Fun Fest. It takes place near the beginning of July on the grounds of City Hall. Andover residents enjoy 2 days of delicious fair food, kids activities, bingo, a community parade and a classic car show. Sun or snow, indoors or out, physical activity is a great way to prepare for a meeting with your Andover tutor.
