About Alto
Alto, California is a small, close knit community that understands the value of preserving California’s open spaces and beautiful landscape. The community’s development began in the 1910’s and 20’s as many people came to settle the area. By the 1970’s, residents realized that if they didn't set some land aside there wouldn’t be any open space left in the area. The community did set about 50 acres of land aside on Horse Hill, where the Alto Bowl Open Space Preserve is today; but that land wasn’t safe yet. In the 1980’s, developers again made plans to build houses on Horse Hill. At this point, residents again realized that they needed to do something to save the open space. The community did do something; they come together to raise enough money to stop developers from breaking ground. The land was saved by local homeowners, the Marin County Open Space District, Marin Community Foundation, and the city of Mill Valley. Horse HIll officially became Alto Bowl Open Space Preserve, and residents can rest easy knowing that developers will never be able to build houses there. Today, community members still protect the land; not from developers but from invasive, exotic plants that threaten to take over the native foliage.
The Alto Bowl Open Space Preserve, is a beautiful place to enjoy California’s natural beauty. Many native plants, and animals call it home. As you walk the trail, you might find evidence of a fox, deer, raccoon, or even coyote. In addition to the wild animals, many horses still roam the area. This scenic spot in the community is a reminder of what the California landscape looked like before it was settled. The Preserve is not just a beautiful spot, it is also a shining example of a community coming together for cause. While the areas around Alto Bowl are still expanding, and there are many benefits that come with a growing community; it’s good to remember to set aside pockets of nature, and preserve the beautiful landscape that once was. The Alto Bowl community could tutor other communities in how to work together and fight for important issues. Communities that can appreciate the value of their surroundings and can work together to reach their goals, can accomplish great things.
Alto tutors want every student to achieve great things. They know how important it is to appreciate your roots, and work hard to get big things accomplished. Alto tutors are available to help you with all of your educational needs.
