About Alliance
Many American cities owe their founding to the railroad industries. Alliance is like every other American town who was built to accommodate the railroad. The town was a merger between several small settlements to create a city that would be a the junction of two major railroads. Railroads coming to the Alliance territory would bring industrial growth and offer personal transportation. Both playing major roles in growing the city. But Alliance would have much more to offer America than just being a stop for the railroad. If you need help in your classes, a tutor in your area can help give you the boost you need. Many historical buildings and even some historical residents made a mark in this town. Alliance residents take pride in their history and enjoy sharing their love for the state’s flower, the scarlet carnation, which originated from a man living in Alliance.
Dr. Levi Lamborn wore many hats. This resident of Alliance found himself to be a doctor, politician and even a great lover of horticulture. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Lamborn found his home in Alliance, OH. There he took a liking to politics. Though, Lamborn was never successful in winning any elections. In 1876 he ran against his friend William McKinley where he would again lose against Mckinley, being his last race in politics. Lamborn also had a great fascination for carnations. In 1886, the former politician and doctor cultivated the flower from French seedlings. He was the among the first to grow carnations in the United States. He even published a book titled “American Carnation Culture”. Lamborn passed his love for carnations on to his fellow friend and future president, William McKinley. Before their debate in 1886, Lamborn gave Mckinley a red carnation. Mckinley won the debate and then the presidential election. From then on, the president adopted the flower as his own good luck charm for the rest of his political career. Red carnations were kept in a vase in the White House during his time as president.
Scarlet carnations were adorned on Mckinley at all times during his presidency. They played a major role in his political and personal life. He made sure bouquets of them were readily available on his desk to gift to his guests. Unfortunately, McKinley’s good luck charm also played a role in his unexpected death. It was September 14, 1901. McKinley removed a scarlet red carnation from his label and gifted it to a young admirer. Just moments after the exchange, McKinley was struck by an assassin’s bullet. He was just six months into his second term as president. Leon Czolgosz was captured as the president’s assassin. Just nine days after McKinley’s death, Czolgosz was sentenced to death which was carried out on October 29, 1901. In memory of his friend and president, Lamborn pushed for the scarlet carnation to be made Ohio’s state flower. On February 3, 1904, the Ohio General Assembly named the scarlet carnation Ohio’s official state flower, in memory of late President McKinley.
