About Wylie
Recently named one of the best places to live in America, Wylie is a beautiful city in northeastern Texas. Its family friendly atmosphere and lakeside amenities make Wylie an ideal place to live. Providing its residents with a high quality of life, Wylie has deep Texas roots and a unique flavor all its own.
With a history in dairy farming, Wylie saw significant growth during the Great Depression, while many other nearby communities began to shrink or go stagnant. During the mid 1900s, onions were another farming success that led to economic growth. Despite other hard times that the country faced, Wylie continued to grow even through World War II.
Fairly recent natural disasters shook Wylie, but despite these hardships, Wylie has rebuilt and recovered. In the early 1990s, a destructive tornado made its way through Wylie’s historic downtown, and a few years later, a series of fires made their way through the area as well. Wylie’s citizens worked together to restore, repair, and save what they could of Wylie’s historic buildings.
With land adjacent to Lavon Lake and nearby to Lake Ray Hubbard, Wylie provides families with all kinds of outdoor activities to enjoy. Water related sports are popular, including swimming, boating, and fishing. Many city parks are located along the lakes, and provide families with great places to picnic, hike, and bike. All of Wylie’s parks are well maintained.
Camping is another popular activity at Lake Lavon. Many campsites are available within the city of Wylie, and families love that a weekend getaway can be found in their own “backyard”. Camping is a great way to enjoy this beautiful area in Texas to the fullest.
Year round, residents and tourists alike can enjoy the wide variety of community events in the city of Wylie. A popular Christmas-time event, The Arts Festival, Parade, and Tree Lighting is a festive event for the whole family. With seasonal foods, activities for kids, a tree lighting, and hundreds of craft vendors, there is so much to do, and residents look forward to this event all year. Another popular city event is the Wylie Championship Rodeo. A fall event, this rodeo brings in rodeo enthusiasts from around the country, and features bull riding, wrangling, and more. A petting zoo and other kids’ games are available for the younger crowd to enjoy, and mechanical bull rides provide entertainment for those who think, “Hey, I could do that!” when watching the rodeo’s events.
