About Greenville

Greenville, about 45 miles up Interstate 30 from Dallas, was first settled in the 1840’s and named after Thomas Jefferson Green, a military man who fought for Texas during the war with Mexico and later became a prominent figure in the Republic of Texas. In those days, settlers farmed cotton from the rich black farmland which they exported to the east and particularly to manufacturers in England. Because cotton was king the Civil War drove a wedge into the community with men such as Martin D. Hart, a prominent attorney and state senator, choosing to side with the Union. Hart led the Greenville Guards in the cause to restore the United States while many of his neighbors fought for the Confederacy.

After the war a violent feud broke out between Confederate sympathizers and those loyal to the Union, prompting the federal government to bring in two companies of cavalry and infantry. Soon, however, peace and prosperity returned to Greenville as the community continued to export cotton and, by the 1890’s, over 200 businesses had opened. With the dawn of the twentieth century Greenville grew from 8,500 residents in 1900 to over 12,000 by the mid 1920’s.

Greenville is often associated with the name of World War II mega-hero, and later star of the silver screen, Audie Murphy. Murphy, the most decorated American soldier during the war, grew up working in the cotton fields around Greenville. After the war, Murphy went on to star in 50 motion pictures, most notably as the youth in the filming of Stephen Crane’s novel The Red Badge of Courage. Today, Murphy’s name is most associated with the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum in Greenville.

The museum includes exhibits honoring American soldiers in its Hall of Heroes which not only commemorates the valiant deeds of Murphy but other Texas heroes who fought in the war. A city tutor from Greenville will be able to tell you about World War II as well as other historical events. The museum is also home to the History of Cotton Exhibit highlighted by the actual cotton compress which set a world record for cotton production in the first part of the twentieth century. Each May the city even holds Audie Murphy Day with special exhibits, guest speakers and screenings of Murphy’s movies.

Greenville offers several other special events during the year and a Greenville tutor will free you up to enjoy some these activities. In April, the Hunt County Fair and Livestock Show brings together the community with agricultural and educational exhibits, live entertainment and a midway full of carnival rides. In June, the city hosts the Cotton Boll Art Fest featuring hand-made items such as pottery, glass and quilts. In early October Greenville comes alive with the sounds of western swing music during the three-day Bob Wills Fiddle Festival and Contest. And, later in the year the city puts on an annual Halloween themed street fair known as The Haunted Landmark and in December the Greenville Christmas Parade rolls through town.
