About Grapevine

Homesteaders began settling in the area that is now Grapevine in the 1840’s and 1850’s. The site of a meeting between General Sam Houston and the representatives of ten roving bands of Native American nations in 1844, the area’s original name was Tah-Wah-Karro Creek, or in English, Grape Vine Springs. The resulting peace treaty made Grapevine the capital of the Republic of Texas for a brief period before it was eventually moved to Austin. In 1937 the area where the meeting took place underwent renovation into a public park with funds from the WPA and was dedicated as a historic spot. During the ceremony, a quartet from the local Lions’ Club performed “Home on the Range” and two local schoolgirls did a Native American dance.

The area continued to grow in the nineteenth century with cotton as king before it was overtaken by cantaloupe in the early 1900’s as Grapevine’s primary agricultural crop. Cantaloupe became so prominent that the city was given the nickname “Cantaloupe Capital of the World.” In the late twentieth this suburb of Dallas-Fort Worth steadily expanded and prospered, partly because of its proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport which opened in 1974.

While Grapevine certainly benefits from its location in a large metropolitan area, the city itself has many enticing and popular attractions. A Grapevine tutor will certainly put you ahead of the curve so you can enjoy what the city has to offer. True to its name, Grapevine is home to a prosperous and burgeoning wine industry. Each September the city hosts GrapeFest, the largest wine festival in the southwestern United States. Throughout the year visitors may also experience the “Urban Wine Trail” which features wine tasting and special events. For history buffs the city has several museums which focus on the history of Texas and the Grapevine area. The Donald Schoolhouse takes visitors back to the days of the one room school and the Grapevine Cotton Ginner’s Museum displays the tools used in cotton farming and offers hands-on activities. Visitors can also board the Grapevine Vintage Railroad which takes them on a trip along the historic Cotton Belt Route in a 1920’s Victorian coach.

For kids and families Grapevine offers the 45,000-square-foot Sea Life Grapevine Aquarium with more than 30 displays housing more than 5,000 sea creatures including clownfish, sea turtles, jellyfish and sharks. Grapevine is also home to Legoland Discovery Center, a 35,000-square-foot attraction with more than two million Lego bricks along with rides and a swimming area dubbed Pirate’s Island which features 30 different interactive pumps spraying thousands of gallons of water.

Grapevine is bordered on its north by an 8,000-acre lake of the same name. The lake plays host to a wealth of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, camping and hiking. Its website boasts that it is the “best lake in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.” The lake has three separate campgrounds, several boat ramps and three marinas. And if hiking is on the agenda the lake has many wonderful trails, most notably the 9.5-mile North Shore Trail.
