As tornados are common in the southwestern United States, Cedar Hill is no stranger to what kind of damage they can cause. A historically terrible tornado struck the city of Cedar Hill in 1856, killing nine citizens and wreaking havoc on homes and farmland. Reportedly, only two buildings were left standing at the end of the storm! How devastating that must have been. The fact that Cedar Hill banded together after the tornado’s destruction is a testament to the goodness (and toughness) of these people.

Unlike a lot of the state of Texas, Cedar Hill has many hills and native trees. Perhaps that is where the name “Cedar Hill” came from! It is a beautiful piece of country, with lakes and parks abounding.

Cedar Hill State Park runs along the northwestern border of the city and runs up against Joe Pool Lake. On the other side of the lake, you will find Estes Park. Cedar Hill State Park is one of the most popular parks in the entire state of Texas. With much of its natural, rugged beauty kept in tact by preservation efforts, visitors claim that they completely forget they are in an “urban” park within the metropolitan area of Dallas/Fort Worth!

On of the most popular parts of Cedar Hill State Park are all of the water activities and sports available at Joe Pool Lake. From kayaking to fishing, the lake is open to recreational use. Fishing piers are available to visitors, as well as campsites and picnicking areas. Around the lake, there are extensive trails to be enjoyed by walkers, hikers, and bicyclists alike. Dorba trail is the most popular trail within the state park, and also the only trail open to off-road bikers. There really is fun for the whole family at Cedar Hill State Park and Joe Pool Lake.

Because of Cedar Hill’s high elevation in relation to the surrounding area, it has become home to many radio and television towers. “Hill Tower” was built for broadcasting purposes. Because it rises so distinctly high from the surrounding land, Hill Tower has become a visual landmark for the city of Cedar Hill.
