About Midway
Midway is an important community in San Diego for many reasons. It has been home to San Diego’s naval presence for several decades, but for even longer, has been a linking community, holding many parts of the city together with its prime location on the mainland of San Diego’s peninsula. Established on the historic La Playa Trail, Midway connected the settlements in Old Town and Mission San Diego with the La Play Beach in Point Loma, where ships loaded and unloaded cargo during the heyday of the naval activities happening near Point Loma. Midway is also the community that links the urban atmosphere of San Diego to its rural roots, found in the rolling hills of the Cabrillo National Monument and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years. Completed in 1855 the lighthouse was in use until 1891, when the light was extinguished and the lighthouse location was moved closer to the point of the peninsula. The lighthouse had a short life because the seemingly good location concealed a flaw that would need to be dealt with: fog and low clouds often obscured the beam of the light that would shine out over the water of the bay. Today, visitors can see and visit the newer Point Loma Lighthouse from the Whale Overlook, 100 yards south of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, also open to public access. Ultimately, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse still stands watch over San Diego, sentinel to another time and way of life. The National Park Service has also refurbished the interior to its historic 1880s appearance. The lighthouse is located at the top of a steep hill and affords visitors a panoramic view of the San Diego Bay.
In addition to the lighthouse and the views, Cabrillo National Monument has hiking trails, tide pools, and a visitors’ center that explains the local wildlife and history of the peninsula. Local flora and fauna abound, and a pleasant breeze blows throughout the day, making all types of weather perfect for a visit to the monument. Midway is the community that has built up down the hill from this stunning landmark in San Diego, facilitating the construction of the lighthouse, as well as the access residents and visitors require to discover the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.
