About Del Cerro
San Diego, a thriving city, is known for is long-standing history connected to the Spanish language. The city name, for example, means “Saint Diego,” and its neighborhoods almost all bear Spanish names—La Mesa, which means “table,” is named for the flat portion of the city. La Jolla, which means “jewel,” is given to a community in the northwestern part of the city, charming on rugged cliffs. Del Cerro, which means “of the hill,” is also named appropriately—it is a residential neighborhood, affluent and quaint, and located in a hilly region in the eastern part of San Diego. Known for its younger residents and established neighborhoods, Del Cerro is also the western entrance of Mission Trails Regional Park.
Mission Trails Regional Park is 7220 acres of protected wildlife, with rugged hills, valleys, and trails that preserve the San Diego that once existed before urban growth and expansion. The San Diego River and Kumeyaay Lake are also found within the park, as well as camping areas and visitors’ centers to keep locals and tourists informed about the area, which offers a brief respite from the city feel of San Diego proper. Del Cerro citizens have worked to preserve their end of the Mission Trails Regional Park, as well as encourage other San Diego residents to visit this refuge with beautification and community initiatives that make Del Cerro one of many close-knit communities that dot the San Diego cityscape.
Further hearkening to the imagery and geography of hills, Cowles Mountain is also found within Mission Trails Regional Park. At over 1500 feet high, the summit is the highest among the rolling hills of San Diego, further reinforcing the location and name of Del Cerro. The hike up the summit is approximately 1.5 miles long, but 360 degree views are afforded to hikers who venture to its peak, including views of Del Cerro and neighboring communities. This part of San Diego sees high temperatures throughout the summer and fall, so visitors are advised to come with water, sunscreen, and enough time to traverse the trails that lead to the top. However, once the peak is reached, a cool ocean breeze greets tired hikers, offering them relief from the grueling journey upwards. Cowles Mountain is worth the effort, not only for the views, but the satisfaction of making it up the highest summit found in the San Diego area—even if the hike is a tiring one.
