About Goleta
In the southern part of Santa Barbara County, you will find the beautiful small city of Goleta. With a small-town feel and big city amenities nearby, Goleta boasts a high quality of life for its residents, and brings in a large amount of tourists throughout the year. Considered to be a beach community with a laid-back vibe, Goleta is a wonderful place to live and a relaxing place to visit.
As is true with most of this region, before Goleta was even a modern city it was populated by the local Native American tribe of Chumash people. It wasn’t until the mid 1500s that the Spanish explorers made their way through this area of Southern California, and it is because of the Spanish missionaries that arrived here that we have all of the missions throughout this region. The nearby Santa Barbara Mission is one of the missions established by these Spanish missionaries.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the land that is now Goleta was filled with citrus orchards. This region of California was known for being ideal for growing citrus crops, and as such, was a very agriculturally based area. With very fertile soil, Goleta has been known for producing a large amount of lemons among other citrus fruits.
With its small-town charm, Goleta also boasts access to many open natural spaces for hiking, biking, and bird watching. Many different species of local wildlife come through the area, and Goleta is known for having raccoons, opossums, coyotes, and other local critters. A local eucalyptus grove in Ellwood Mesa in Goleta is known for attracting large swaths of Monarch butterflies during their mating and hatching seasons.
Goleta includes several local beaches, and this provides residents with access to many beach activities, including surfing, sailing, and sunset watching. Many nature trails can be found along the coastline, and they are popular for biking, hiking, and trail running. Camping along the beach in certain designated areas is also a very popular activity for locals and tourists alike.
When it comes to schools, Goleta his served by the Goleta Union School District as well as the Santa Barbara High School District because of its close location. A number of public elementary schools are available to local school kids, along with several middle school and high school options. For any students that may need extra help with their studies, local Goleta tutors are available. These local tutors can meet one-on-one with each student to help them reach their educational goals.
