About Sunset District
Sunset District is the largest neighborhood in San Francisco, California. One of Sunset District’s most popular features is Golden Gate Park. At 1,017 acres, Golden Gate Park is 20% larger than Central Park (in New York). Every year more than thirteen million visitors come to appreciate all that the urban park has to offer; which makes it the fifth most visited park in the U.S.
In the 1860’s, the growing city wanted to create a large public park like that of New York’s Central Park. At the time, Golden Gate Park was the Outside Lands, a bunch of undeveloped sand dunes. Incredibly, those dunes were transformed into the massive urban park that it is today. Visitors enjoy countless attractions and educational opportunities including the Music Concourse area, the De Young Museum, the Japanese Tea Gardens, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, Kezar Stadium, lakes and outdoor recreation areas, and so much more.
One of Golden Gate Park’s attractions is the California Academy of Sciences. Established in 1853, it is the oldest scientific institution in the western United States. Today, it is one of the ten largest natural history museums in the world; with over eighteen million scientific specimens between the research institute and the exhibits. The original museum was built between 1916 and 1976, and was comprised of eleven different buildings. Unfortunately, all but three of those buildings were destroyed in the 1989 earthquake. In 2008, the new 37,000 square meter museum was reopened; with exhibits of natural history, aquatic life, astronomy, gems and minerals, and earthquakes. The museum's roof is also quite impressive with a 2.5 acre living roof, that has 1.7 million native California plants. The living roof covers the planetarium and rainforest exhibitions, and helps decrease stormwater runoff, naturally cools the buildings, and creates some of the energy used to power the museum. All of these advancements have made it the only U.S. Green Building Council granted LEED-platinum certified museum in the country.
One unexpected feature of Golden Gate Park is the Bison Paddock. In 1891, the park added a small herd of Bison to help promote the dwindling North American bison population. At one time, the captive breeding program helped more than one hundred young bison into the world. In 1984, a new herd was added to the park as a present for Mayor Dianne Feinstein, from her husband. Today’s bison are the descendants of that birthday present. In 2011, the bison herd in Golden Gate Park had been reduced to three bison; but Assemblywoman Fiona Ma helped organize grants and donations, and worked with the San Francisco Zoo and San Francisco Recreation and Parks to gain seven more. Today, visitors can stop by the Paddock and see those incredible animals.
