In a state known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” the city of White Bear Lake, Minnesota is named after the largest lake in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Legend has it that White Bear Lake was named when a Chippewa brave fought a great white bear on Manitou Island to protect the life of a Sioux maiden he was in love with. Both brave and bear died and some say their spirits still wander the island. American author Mark Twain included a version of this story in his book Life on the Mississippi. While Native Americans were the first to come to the White Bear Lake area hundreds of years ago, settlement by European-Americans came after the Civil War when the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad extended its line from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Twain described White Bear Lake as the most popular resort in the “magic northlands.” With the fading of the resort era in the early 1900’s the economy depended on agriculture and lumber milling. The city was eventually incorporated in 1921.

Every summer White Bear Lake celebrates itself during the three-week Manitou Days which includes Marketfest, a free family festival when local businesses and vendors offer a variety of food, merchandise, arts and crafts. The festival includes the Medallion Hunt, a scavenger hunt type activity with a grand prize of $1,000, and a Grand Parade along scenic Lake Avenue. Tamarack Nature Center is a 320-acre preserve in the Bald Eagle-Otter Lakes Regional Park which features both winter and summer recreational activities, a rock climbing area and garden. Pine Tree Apple Orchard is also a popular destination for visitors and residents alike of White Bear Lake. The orchard goes back to 1904 when the first apple orchards were planted on Pine Tree Lake just east of White Bear.

Because of drought, the lake which gives the city its name has been little more than a mud hole in recent years and its largest beach closed since 2009. Recently, however, the lake has come up nearly five feet and city officials are on the verge of reopening the beach. One of the locals’ favorite pastimes is fishing, both on White Bear as well as Bald Eagle Lake. Anglers will be able to catch a variety of fish including sun fish, bass, walleye and pike. A trip to White Bear Lake wouldn’t be complete without visiting Tally’s Dockside Boathouse and Pub which offers a boat marina, restaurant and bar. Tally’s has been a destination for travelers from Minneapolis and St. Paul since its opening in 1939. Today, the restaurant features Memphis-style barbecue and an ice cream parlor.

Only a few miles north of St. Paul, White Bear Lake benefits from the activities and attractions in the urban area. Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is just a short drive west. The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals including gorillas, giraffes, polar bears and penguins. It’s also the site of the Marjorie McNeely sunken garden and several pieces of historic sculptures such as Donald Shepard’s “St. Francis of Assisi.”
