About Lino Lakes
The Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park Preserve is located in the heart of Lino Lakes, Minnesota. The 5,500-acre preserve, with its seven interconnected lakes, is a water-lover’s dream, an important migratory bird habitat, a site of significant native wildlife, and a treasure for Anoka County residents and visitors alike.
Besides picnic areas, bike paths, playgrounds, a boat launch, and a fishing pier, the preserve offers several features that make it a very special place.
Water Trail
Serious paddlers can trek from the Lake Peltier boat ramp to the Mississippi River, a distance of about twenty-two miles. The trip takes eight to ten hours, depending on the water level and the number of rest stops. Along the way, paddlers will see some amazing scenery and will almost certainly encounter wildlife such as snowy egrets, herons, raptors, beavers, raccoons, sandpipers, turtles, leopard frogs, bald eagles, and osprey.
Wargo Nature Center
The preserve’s nature center invites educators, students, residents, and tourists to learn about the area’s wildlife and native plants. Classes are held in birding (by hike or by boat), Nordic walking, wildflowers and phenology, kayaking, bees, medicinal plants, wolves, and more. Who knew that Lino Lakes tutoring and educational programs could be so fun! Visitors can also rent kayaks, canoes, snowshoes, or GPS units with which to explore the preserve on their own.
Chomonix Golf Course
Golfers will have quite an adventure on this eighteen-hole course, with its mature trees, scenic water views, and wildlife that might even venture onto the course.
Rice Creek Campground
In the middle of scenic wilderness, this campground accommodates both tent and RV campers. There are also small cabins, laundry facilities, a visitor center, and a group campsite for up to sixty people. Campers can fish, boat, swim, play golf, or visit the Wargo Nature Center, about a mile away.
Centerville Lake Beach
This picturesque beach is a great place for a game of volleyball or some playtime at the playground, followed by a refreshing dip in the lake.
Native American sites
The park also contains twenty-five Native American sites, including burial grounds that probably date back to the year 1400. Indians who lived here relied heavily on fish and wild rice to sustain them.
Lino Lakes is fortunate to have the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes covering a fair amount of the city’s twenty-eight square miles. Lino Lakes tutors and teachers who take advantage of the park’s amenities can share information and insight about the natural world with their students. Whether into kayaking, birding, hiking, or educational opportunities, visitors are fortunate to have such an expansive park for their pleasure—and all within merely ten miles of the major metropolitan area of St. Paul, Minnesota.
