About Oregon City

Once the capital of the Oregon Territory and currently the seat of Clackamas County, Oregon City, Oregon is less than 20 miles south along the Willamette River from Portland. Looking to establish a lumber mill and fur trading center, Hudson’s Bay Company’s John McLoughlin founded Oregon City on the Willamette River just below the largest water fall in the Pacific Northwest. By 1839 the community consisted of a small group of Hudson’s Bay Company workers but with the announcement of the Donation Land Claim Act in 1850 more settlers came to Oregon for free land and a new start. Officially created in 1848 the Oregon Territory became a magnet for those moving west and between 1843 and 1869 more than half a million people took the Oregon Trail to either Oregon or California. As capital of the new territory Oregon City grew rapidly as farms sprouted up and steamboats began to ship crops and products north and south on the Willamette. In 1866 the Pioneer Paper Manufacturing Company built the first paper mill in Oregon City and although it soon closed it introduced an industry which would have a lasting impression on the city.

Trained as a physician and later an executive of Hudson’s Bay Company, John McLoughlin added city builder and philanthropist to his list of accomplishments when he came to Oregon City, first to set up a lumber mill and later to help settlers who had just arrived from the Oregon Trail. Today known as the “Father of Oregon,” McLoughlin built a house in Oregon City in 1846 which still stands and is open to the public for tours, demonstrations and special events. For further information about Oregon City’s history the Museum of the Oregon Territory features exhibits covering 10,000 years of history, offering a glimpse into the life of the early Native Americans as well as the American settlers who crossed the continent on the Oregon Trail.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are more than 20 different parks in Oregon City. These parks feature a wide variety of recreational activities. At the confluence of the Willamette and Clackamas rivers, appropriately named Clackamette Park has something for everybody with beach access, boat launch, skate park and horseshoe pits. With 16 acres of space, Hillendale Park offers playgrounds, athletic fields, basketball courts and a wetlands preservation area. For kids, Carnegie Spraypark is adjacent to the library at Carnegie Center. The park has 20 spray nozzles, water cannons and splash buckets for plenty of summertime fun.

For something completely different, Oregon City is home to the only “Municipal Elevator” in the United States. The 130-foot elevator connects Oregon City’s downtown with the historic McLoughlin neighborhood. The elevator was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 and features an observation deck. It is currently home to the “Illuminate Oregon City” art project.
