About Roseville
Roseville, California is an ever-growing city east of Sacramento, enjoying economic success and valuable properties over the last few decades. Roseville has many claims to local California fame, but among them is a national one—Molly Ringwald, sweetheart of the 1980s, was born in this quaint suburb.
Ringwald is best known for her teenager roles in the so-called “Brat Pack” movies directed by John Hughes. Sweet Sixteen, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and The Pickup Artist are among her best-known films in the eighties, though she has been acting on stage, on television, and in movies since the age of ten.
In 1988, Ringwald starred in For Keeps and played a pregnant teenager, a stand out at her high school, and decides to keep her baby, marry her boyfriend, and try to succeed despite the hardships of new motherhood. This was her first film that marked her departure from teen movies, and it was also her first controversial piece. It was met with mixed reviews, but Ringwald’s own take on the role was significant. In an interview, she claimed, “I didn't want to give the wrong message to teenagers. I sort of felt a certain responsibility – I mean, I was a very, very famous teenager and I thought a lot of teenagers were looking up to me and emulating me, and I really didn't want to make a movie that said in any way that having a baby at that age was going to be easy.” Conscientious of her image and the importance of the role, Ringwald wanted to honor the truth of the part, but not idealize it and send the wrong message to fellow teenagers in the late eighties. Incidentally, teenage pregnancy rates have consistently declined in the United States since 1990, perhaps thanks (in part) to more honest, unflinching media portrayals of young motherhood in movies like For Keeps. This is regarded as one of Ringwald’s best roles.
Ringwald’s dedication to her craft is reflected in the quality of her work—she not only acts, but also sings and dances, having released a variety of musical albums in addition to her work in front of the camera. She maintains a name for herself after a career that has lasted for four decades, and will no doubt continue creating and performing in the future as well.
Similarly, Roseville tutors seek excellence in their work and are acutely aware of the academic needs of their clients, just as Ringwald was acutely aware of her audience and their needs in For Keeps. Students who work with tutors in Roseville are in capable hands, and can think of Ringwald’s compelling career as an example of what long-term dedication to personal passion looks like over a lifetime.
