About Westminster
In the heart of Orange County only a few miles from the best beaches in the world, Westminster, California offers a wealth of indoor and outdoor activities and attractions. Beginning in the early 19th century and continuing through Prohibition in the 1920’s and 1930’s the American Temperance Movement frowned upon and rallied against the drinking of alcohol. Led by the Presbyterians, the movement achieved its greatest success with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution banning the distilling and drinking of alcohol in the United States. The city of Westminster is a product of this milieu having been founded as a temperance colony by Reverend Lemuel Webber in 1870. He named the city after the English Westminster Assembly of 1643 which laid the foundations for the Presbyterian religion at the height of the Reformation. To prove their abstinence, early Westminster farmers refrained from growing grapes because of their association with wine. Despite the lack of vineyards, agriculture, especially dairies, remained a staple of Westminster’s economy throughout the late 1800’s into the 20th century. The Southern Pacific Railroad assisted in this endeavor and by 1910 the railroad was shipping products east.
After the Vietnam War, several thousand Southeast Asian immigrants came to Westminster settling in what is now referred to as Little Saigon. This Asian population celebrates the Tet New Year in Westminster with the annual Asian Garden Flower Festival. The festival lasts over a month while gardeners display their exotic flowers and trees, some costing as much as $1,000. Orchids in multiple colors are a fixture of the celebration as they are believed to bring good luck for the new year.
A Westminster tutor will keep caught up on your studies so you can take time away from the books to experience everything there is to do in the area. Residents and visitors alike benefit from a variety of attractions. Beaches along Highway 1 include the Belmont Shore in Long Beach, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach and Huntington Beach. Visitors to Long Beach can take a tour of the famous Queen Mary, built at a time when ocean liners were the primary way to travel overseas. The Queen Mary’s interior has been restored so that it looks much as it did when it embarked on its maiden voyage in 1936. Reports of haunting on board may even give visitors a chance see a ghost while touring the luxury cabins or cramped quarters where second class and third class passengers traveled. One thing is for sure, visitors will witness a spectacular fireworks’ display on July 4.
Westminster is only a short drive away from the “Happiest Place on Earth,” otherwise known as Disneyland in nearby Anaheim. Built in the 1950’s by visionary entrepreneur Walt Disney, Disneyland and its sister park California Adventure have hosted tens of millions of visitors over the years. Attractions at Disneyland include Main Street, Adventureland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Iconic rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Matterhorn have delighted adults and children alike for many years. California Adventure, opened in 2001, features unique rides such as Soaring over California and Radiator Springs Racers.
