About Glen Avon

Glen Avon, California is about four miles from the Flabob Airport. The Flabob Airport has a rich history in aviation and many ground breaking aviators were involved in the effort to create a place to land aircrafts in the popular Riverside area. By 1925, there was an air strip that was utilized by many pilots; but it would be Flavio Madariaga and Bob Bogen who officially established the airport in 1943. You may have guessed that the name of the airport was created by combining Flavio and Bob, their first names. The airport would see many famous pilots and celebrities, and even be a filming location for a few movies; but what is most notable about the airport is not it’s star studded history, but the non-profit organization that is being run out of it today.

When Tom Wathen retired, he wanted to do something to help serve the community. He also had a deep love and appreciation for aviation. Tom decided to buy Flabob Airport and turn it into an organization that would not only keep the airport from being torn down and turned into something else, but help families throughout the area. The Tom Wathen Center is an organization meant to inspire students through aviation. The organization strives to help middle and high school aged students do well in school and go on to reach their professional goals. The center includes programs that help support STEM learning, STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, all subjects that are highly relevant in the aviation world. The center runs multiple clubs that support teens through skill and character building activities, field trips, and other opportunities; helping them stay out of trouble and learn practical life lessons. The center also teaches airplane maintenance and restoration, and even gives pilot lessons. Novice pilots are tutored in the complex operations of flying airplanes and many get the opportunity to do something they may have never done otherwise. Students can even attend the Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy, a charter school located in the airport. The Tom Wathen center works hard to serve as many students as possible and help them reach their dreams .
