About Nob Hill
One of the most well-known neighborhoods in the nation, Nob Hill, is located in San Francisco, California, and has a rich history steeped in wealth and luxury. Originally, Nob Hill was called California Hill, but after the first mansions were built in the neighborhood, it was renamed for its famous railroad baron residents—Central Pacific Railroad’s Big Four: Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, and Collis Huntington—who were known as “Nobs” amongst the less affluent.
Unfortunately for its uber wealthy inhabitants, the neighborhood was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Though the original mansion owners scattered and moved to other areas, Nob Hill was able to maintain its affluent reputation since several swanky hotels were built over the mansions’ ruins.
One of the most iconic and palatial of the hotels to be constructed in Nob Hill was The Fairmont San Francisco, the vanguard for the successful hotel and resorts chain. Named after mining magnate James Graham Fair by his daughters, the hotel would come to be synonymous with glittering balls, presidential visits, and political and high society occasion.
The Fairmont San Francisco opened its doors in 1907, after the disastrous wake of the earthquake and fire the preceding year. To repair the damage to the hotel’s interior, Julia Morgan, architect and engineer, was hired. Her innovative use of reinforced concrete would produce buildings capable of withstanding any ensuing disasters. With the help of Nob Hill tutors, students are encouraged and challenged to grow into innovators like Julia Morgan or successful leaders like the Big Four.
The hotel would see more excitement in the coming years, though for less tragic reasons. The Fairmont hosted statesmen which culminated in the drafting of the United Nations Charter in 1945, and within the Venetian Room, Tony Bennett first sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in the 1960s. Several exciting and historical events have transpired within the halls of many of the Fairmont hotels across the world, but The Fairmont San Francisco will always be the original.
Nob Hill isn’t just The Fairmont and upper-class families, though. Opposite the famed hotel is the grand Grace Cathedral, one of the city's largest houses of worship, and the Masonic Temple, which is located across the street from Grace Cathedral. In the Lower Nob Hill area, the Academy of Art University owns and operates several buildings for housing and educational opportunities. Nob Hill tutoring can prepare students for a future among the young urban professional population that is flooding the streets of Nob Hill.
