Just west of Hollywood and about 30 minutes from downtown Miami, Pembroke Pines, Florida is a suburb in the Miami metropolitan region and the second largest city in Broward County. Much of the area which would become Pembroke Pines was swampland sparsely occupied by the Tequesta people who settled there and throughout the southeastern coast of Florida 4,000 years ago. By the 1800’s, however, the Tequesta were gone, victims of disease and war. In the 1880’s, British politician and railroad magnate Sir Edward Reed purchased two million acres of the land which would become Pembroke Pines for the Florida Transit and Peninsular Railroad. Before building railroads, Reed had been a naval architect credited with overseeing the British navy’s transition from wooden ships to ironclads. He was also a member of the British Parliament representing Pembroke on the west coast of Wales. Ultimately this name was applied to the drained swampland in Florida which became a small settlement for farmers, especially dairy farmers. Not surprisingly, two of the major roads through the city are Pines Boulevard and Pembroke Road. As for Reed, he returned to the United Kingdom and served in Parliament until his death in 1906. Significant growth didn’t occur in Pembroke Pines until after World War II when servicemen who had been stationed at various military bases in the area returned to set up permanent residence. Between 1960 and 2000 the city’s population doubled every ten years so that today it is the eleventh largest city in Florida. The real estate website Niche gives Pembroke Pines an A+ in ethnic and economic diversity with median household incomes exceeding $60,000 a year.

Access to the area is limited and the interior can only be reached by air boat. Hunting, fishing and air boating are available to visitors. Animals native to the Everglades include alligators, crocodiles, a variety of other reptiles, mammals such as rabbits and wild cats, manatees and numerous different bird species. The best time to view wildlife in the Everglades is between December and April.

Located just off Interstate 75 at Pines Boulevard, the Shops at Pembroke Gardens is a diverse outdoor shopping center serving several local communities. With more than 75 shops and restaurants the gardens are opened throughout the year. Trendy shops include Banana Republic, Lane Bryant and Sephora. Popular restaurants and eateries such as Brio Tuscan Grille, Cheesecake Factory and Village Tavern offer various dining experiences for garden shoppers.
