    About The Peninsula

According to San Francisco Peninsula tutors whilst the geographic peninsula includes the city of San Francisco, the moniker ‘The Peninsula’ does not, and refers to everything but the city of San Francisco on the peninsula, including San Mateo County, and northern Santa Clara County. San Francisco city is widely known to locals as “The City.” This unusual distinction it is thought to linger over from when over one hundred years ago the City of San Francisco and the County of San Francisco were two very different entities.

The center of “The Peninsula” is marked by the presence of the northern half of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Santa Cruz Mountains separate the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco Bay, and the range continues south all the way down to Monterey Bay in the central coast. The mountains were formed along the San Andreas Fault line. San Francisco Peninsula tutors say that “compressive uplift” is responsible for the appearance of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This term describes how the land is forced up when two tectonic plates are pushed into one another. The fault was named after the San Andreas Lake, which sits just north of the Crystal Springs reservoir.

The San Andreas Fault is a well-known continental transform fault that runs through California. It is well known because it presents a great risk to those living nearby of severe damage should a large-scale earthquake occur. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, it was found that the fault line ran all the way into southern California. San Francisco Peninsula tutors warn that the fault divides into three segments. The segment that has with it the highest degree of earthquake risk is the piece that passes within about 35 miles of Los Angeles. Tutors speculate that the southern segment is capable of an 8.1 magnitude earthquake. The damage resulting from this would be catastrophic, and thousands of people would be killed in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside, along with hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. The segment on which “The Peninsula” sits is known as the northern segment or Calaveras Fault. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was identified as having the epicenter in the Santa Cruz Mountains up the San Francisco Peninsula. The 1906 San Francisco earthquakes epicenter was just offshore. There are many sister faults running alongside the San Andreas Fault that run parallel. According to San Francisco Peninsula tutors each of these faults are significant and could create highly destructive earthquakes.
