    About Irving

Williams Square in Irving, Texas is home to eight wild mustangs, 1.8 times the size of a standard horse. Forever pounding through the square’s fountain, these mustangs are cast in bronze and showcase the wild beauty of these important animals to Texas history. Robert Glen, the sculptor of these eight animals, commemorates the free spirt associated with Texas, and provides a stunning visual of galloping horses through the middle of a metroplex in Irving.

Mustangs, in North America, are the feral descendants of the domesticated horses the Spaniards brought with them when they first explored this new continent. Mustangs roam free, in herds, and have evolved to weather the harsh terrain and conditions of the American frontier. For centuries, these majestic animals have galloped over prairie and mountain alike, surefooted and strong. They were key to the formation of Texas, particularly the North Central part of the state, and Irving’s Las Colinas district showcases a pride in the animal’s place in Texas history.

Horses were vital to settling the frontier. Mustangs were domesticated by Native Americans, Mexicans, and white settlers who came to Texas seeking land and fortune. Horse breaking was a difficult task, but crucial for transportation and labor. It took skill, patience, and quick thinking to tame a wild mustang, but once domesticated, these animals were healthy and dependable commodities to ranches, farmers, cowboys, and lawmen.

Paved in granite, Williams Square slopes slightly downward, so that to onlookers, the mustangs appear to be charging head-on. The plaza’s unique configuration, with the body of water adding to the realism of the larger-than-life horses, won a National Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Nearby, the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum, which features information and exhibitions, as well as a film about Robert Glen’s work as a sculptor and the story of how the mustangs came to grace Williams Square.

Tutors in Irving may not be called upon to tame the wild spirits of their clients, but they are able to form working relationships with the populations of students they serve. With the same care, patience, and diligence, tutors work to bring out the best in each of their clients. Though capricious and tenacious, wild mustangs have proven to be iconic reminders of the endless potential represented in states like Texas. Likewise, the endless potential for success is found within each student seeking the help of Grade Potential tutors.
