About Austin
Known for being a young, up-and-coming city in the Lone Star State, Austin is attractive to young families, retired folks, and tourists alike. With a large focus on culture and the arts, Austin is also a big commercial center within the state of Texas, boasting big names in the technology industry as well. It's no wonder that Austin is growing so fast — it is the fastest growing city of its size in the entire nation.
Austin is the capital city in Texas, and as such, boasts beautiful government buildings and state facilities. The history of the city goes back beyond when Spanish settlers first arrived in this area fresh off the boat from Europe. The Native Americans that lived here on this land were the Tonkawa tribe, and artifacts from thousands of years ago demonstrate that people have been living on this land since as far back as 9000 B.C. So even though Austin is quite a "modern" city today, the land itself has a very rich, long history.
In the early 1800s, Texas won its independence from the country of Mexico, and because of its proximity to Mexico there is still a very strong Mexican cultural influence to this day. After winning its independence, the Republic of Texas was formed, as its own independent country. It wasn't until years later that Texas was annexed by the United States, and it was for many reasons, one being that the threat of Mexico trying to take it back was looming. Incorporation into the United States was very beneficial to Texas. At this time, Austin was made the state capital.
Technology is a major industry and source of economic growth in Austin, Texas. The local university provides many technology-based programs, continuously pumping out fresh graduates into the work force of Austin. Austin is all about promoting small businesses, counter-culture movements, and the arts community. It is for this reason that Austin has embraced the slogan, "Keep Austin Weird." Art festivals, events, and concerts can be found throughout the year here in Austin, and it is one reason that Austin has become so popular among young people looking for a modern city to live in that provides a platform for burgeoning issues of today.
