    About Reynoldsburg

Reynoldsburg, Ohio is known as “The Birthplace of the Tomato”, because according to the Franklin County History Society, it is where the very first commercial variety of tomatoes were successfully bred. Reynoldsburg was home to horticulturist Alexander W. Livingston, and the first commercial tomato was the product of his hard work. At the time, tomatoes were not known for tasting very good, and when they did taste good, it was hard to grow and process them in a way that in which they would maintain their flavor. But in 1870, Livingston unveiled the Paragon tomato. This species of tomato was delicious and easy to grow and process, making it the first successful commercial tomato.

This was a very important accomplishment because tomatoes have since become a staple in the American diet. In fact, tomatoes are said to be the third most widely consumed vegetable; coming in right after potatoes and lettuce. For those of you who consider tomatoes a fruit, it should be noted that in 1893, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the tomato is, in fact, a vegetable. So legally, when consuming tomatoes, you are getting one of your daily servings of veggies not fruit. Tomatoes are also an important part of the Ohio economy. As a state, Ohio is third largest producer of tomatoes in the country. Who would have known that simply finding a way to grow and produce a good tasting vegetable, would have such an impact on the economy, the State of Ohio, and the diet of the entire nation.

In, 1965, the Reynoldsburg City Council dedicated a plaque to commemorate the Franklin County History Society’s claim that Reynoldsburg was the birthplace of the first commercial tomato. It was that dedication that launched the Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival. In honor of Livingston and his legendary accomplishment, the city of Reynoldsburg hosts the Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival every third weekend in August; and has every year since the plaque's dedication.

Today, thousands of festival-goers flock to Reynoldsburg to enjoy contests, live music, arts and craft exhibits, displays, food, and of course plenty of fun activities for kids. They also crown a Tomato Festival Queen and Court for young ladies in the eleventh and twelfth grade; Little Princess for girls entering second grade; and a Senior King and Queen for ladies and gentlemen sixty-five and older. For those looking for a little friendly competition, there are several tomato- themed contests including: the Largest Tomato, Smallest Tomato, Tallest Tomato Vine, Most Oddly Formed Tomato, Best Group of Tomatoes, Best Group of Heirloom Tomatoes, Best Tomato-based Dessert, Best Tomato-based Bread or Pastry, Mild Salsa, and Hot Salsa. Reynoldsburg residents could tutor us all in how many different ways you can use a tomato.

Reynoldsburg tutors want all students to grow and cultivate a deep love for learning. If your student is struggling in school, a Reynoldsburg tutor could be just the help and support you are looking for. Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
