Ohio Columbus Barber was an American businessman, industrialist and philanthropist. He was also said to be the “king of matches.” Called "America's Match King" because of leadership of the Diamond Match Company. He thought founding the city of Barberton, Ohio would be a perfect match to his vision. He founded it, developed it, and went on to produce 250 matches per day there.

The city has always had a bit of light to it, since its onset, in 1891. Barber had a vision of making Barberton both a model industrial and residential development. He sought to encourage education, sponsor medical advances, build community, and grow abundantly, which it did. Within a few years city growth all but exploded with industry. It grew so fast that it was nicknamed “Magic City.”

Farming was also integral to Barber’s vision for “Magic City.” He bought 3500 acres of land, intending for the farm he created to be the basis of an agricultural college. Barberton was spawned from a vision of industrial, agricultural, and educational success that still invigorates its schools and students today.

The city’s 3700 children from kindergarten through twelfth grade flourish. The schools have a vision of excellence supported by the State of Ohio’s “Excellent” rating. Numerous times they have received an “A” in academic progress. The structure for success was planted at its onset and continued onward to the present day.
