Baseball will always remain one of the greatest American pastimes. Towns across the country take great pride in being home to their own baseball team. The town of Avon proudly introduced their own baseball team in 2009, named the Lake Erie Crushers. Located near the coastline of Lake Erie, the team is a member of an independent league. The Frontier League is a professional, independent baseball organization for the Midwest. Being formed in 1993, the Frontier League is the longest running independent league to date. Although, they are considered a professional league, they are not affiliated with Major or Minor League Baseball teams. Avon is still proud to have their own baseball team and to be put on the map as home to one of America’s greatest pastime sports.

The town of Avon announced the name a logo for the Avon Professional Baseball team on December 4, 2008. Avon was officially home to the Lake Erie Crushers when the Sprenger Stadium opened on June 3, 2009, the same year the Crushers won their first Frontier League Championship. The team earned their name through a “Name the Team” contest. Fans from Avon and other surrounding towns entered hundreds of names. After the entries were narrowed down, fans voted on a town location and team name. Those who voted had a name choice between Groove, Ironmen, Red Tails, Artichokes, Crushers, Walleyes, and Woollie. Crushers was chosen by the residents which was fitting for the Great Lakes viticulture region. Ohio has been home to wine producers since it first became a state in the 1830s. Today, they are even competition for the world-renowned Californian wine country. Avon itself lies in the Lake Erie coastline which is one of Ohio’s best wine producer regions. Tourists and residents can explore the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Wine Trail. Wines influenced by the sea breezes can be tastes along one of the state’s most scenic regions. Families who have farmed the region for generations still make their claim here with their own historical wineries sprinkled across the coastline.

The original black and red team colors were replaced with purple and white in March, 2017 when new logos and uniforms were announced. The new logos featured an “angry” baseball grape, wielding a bat and cluster of grapes. Crusher’s grape influenced logo has proved fitting as the region's wine country becomes more and more popular with tourists and residents alike.
