About Ross

East of the Ohio River and north of Pittsburgh, Ross Township, Pennsylvania is a large suburb in Allegheny County. Originally the hunting grounds of the Cornplanter tribe of the Seneca, the area which would become Ross Township wasn’t inhabited by European-Americans until well into the 18th century. The early settlers lived in constant fear of the Seneca who, despite a treaty negotiated with George Washington, regarded their new neighbors as trespassers and would often raid the newcomers’ farms. By the early 1800’s, however, most of the Native Americans in Pennsylvania had been driven west by American expansion. In 1809 the area was named after prominent Federalist judge and politician James Ross. Born in southeast Pennsylvania in 1762 he came west at the age of eighteen, teaching and preparing for a career as a lawyer. In 1790 he was part of the delegation which drafted the Pennsylvania state constitution. Ross later became an intermediary for the federal government during the Whiskey Rebellion. Pennsylvania farmers grew angry when their whiskey was taxed to help pay for the Revolutionary War. After several ugly incidents between farmers and federal agents, George Washington asked Ross and other important Pennsylvanians to negotiate with farmers. The two sides agreed to a resolution but many farmers refused to accept the terms. It finally took the presence of 11,000 federal troops in western Pennsylvania to put down the rebellion. Primarily an agricultural town for much of its history, Ross Township began to see growth in the 20th century and more than doubled its population in the years after World War II. Today, Ross Township is mostly residential and boasts a high percentage of residents who own their own home.

The mall is anchored by major department stores Macy’s, JC Penney and Sears. Specialty stores include Louis Vuitton, Apple Store, Crate & Barrel and L.L. Bean. Restaurant options such as The Cheesecake Factory, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Charley’s Philly Steaks and Panera Bread will satisfy those with a big appetite or those who just want a snack.

Ross Township sports fans have only a short drive into Pittsburgh to see professional football and baseball. The ever-popular Steelers, winners of six world championships, play on the banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers at Heinz Field. Next door, Major League Baseball’s Pirates compete in PNC Park. True fans should cross Roberto Clemente Bridge over the Allegheny and pay homage to the Pirate legend at his statue right outside the ballpark. Clemente Hall of Fame career was cut short when he was killed transporting supplies to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua in 1972.
